A Personal Mission Turned Industry Standard: How Gordon Bruce and Insite Specialist Services are Redefining Hazard Reduction
When new legislation like Awaab’s Law is introduced, the construction and housing sectors often scramble to adjust their procedural compliance. But for Gordon Bruce, Director of Insite Specialist Services, the drive to eradicate damp and mould is not a reaction to new regulations, it is the culmination of a decades-long personal and professional mission.
As we prepare to exhibit at the Scottish Construction and Housing Summit at the SEC in Glasgow this Thursday 22nd October, we are shining a spotlight on the team leading the frontline response to Scotland’s housing health crisis.
A Pivot Driven by Personal Experience
Gordon’s expertise is rooted in decades of hands-on experience spanning local authority joinery, estimating, surveying, construction management, and insurance damage. However, the defining moment of his career occurred seventeen years ago, when his own severe health reactions to mould in water-damaged buildings sparked a profound pivot toward innovative environmental protection.
This firsthand understanding of the devastating physiological impact of mycotoxins and biocontaminants drove Gordon to engineer unique, science-backed systems designed to combat mould, bacteria, viruses, VOCs, and particulates. These groundbreaking interventions famously safeguarded care homes and NHS facilities during the COVID-19 pandemic, protected delegates at COP26, and recently earned a prestigious Innovation Award at the Scottish Housing Awards for their transformative impact in the social housing sector.
Insite Specialist Services: Science Over Guesswork
Under Gordon’s leadership, Insite Specialist Services has completely moved away from the industry's historical reliance on visual assumptions and superficial treatments. At Stand 40, the division will be showcasing its highly technical, rapid-response methodology:
Advanced Diagnostics: Moving past what Gordon terms “Ass2 surveying” (assumptions based on previous assumptions), the team utilises state-of-the-art thermal imaging, borescopes, and moisture meters to pinpoint the exact source of water ingress and hidden moisture.
The KPP System (Kill, Prevent, Protect): Rather than masking the issue with bleach or anti-mould paint, Insite Specialist Services deploys a sustainable, non-toxic protocol that eliminates harmful microorganisms at a cellular level, applies long-lasting treatments to inhibit regrowth, and establishes a continuous protective barrier.
Rapid Hazard Reduction: By treating mould as an urgent, primary health hazard from the moment of germination, the division implements emergency containment and specialist drying to dramatically reduce risks and avoid the need to decant residents.
Elevating Sector Competence
Gordon’s mission extends beyond treating individual properties; he is determined to raise the baseline competence of the entire industry. Recognising a dangerous gap in frontline knowledge, Gordon recently created the nation’s first SCQF Level 6 accredited training course on 'Water Damaged Buildings'.
Fully cognisant of Awaab’s Law, this internationally accredited qualification ensures that social housing landlords, surveyors, and operatives have the rigorous diagnostic skills required to verify their actions and validate their results.
"Water damage and toxic mould are not just routine maintenance headaches; they are fundamental health and safety priorities.
True resident protection comes from raising frontline competence, which is why we created Scotland's first SCQF Level 6 qualification, equipping teams to get the diagnosis and remediation right the first time."
